Huff and Puff and Yuk Foo!

Who Needs Little Red Riding Hood When You Have the big, bad Wolf Alice? Seriously.

The U.K. is churning out music like crazy, so it’s no wonder why they are the second largest exporter of music behind the U.S. And rightfully so. Just this month, Wolf Alice began their mostly sold out American tour, having made MASSIVE waves in the alternative rock scene stateside with their debut album My Love Is Cool.

This album is rock solid if you are looking for some new alternative rock to listen to, as they have somehow found the 90’s rock fountain of youth. Veruca Salt, with a little Hole and The Breeders mixed in, just to dirty it up enough with grunge-filled guitar effects and straightforward rock bass and drums. Add in lead singer Ellie Rowsell’s dreamy, and sometimes screamy, voice and you’ve got Wolf Alice. It’s like The Breeders Cannonball or Veruca Salt’s Volcano Girls just gave birth to a brand new baby and I have nothing but love for it. Goochy goo.

Bros is my favorite track on the LP, telling a sentimental tale of best friendship that I get warm and fuzzy about for some reason. This is followed closely by a heavy-90s-esque grunge tune called Your Loves Whore, which seems to me like a song about love gained and lost, whether shallow or not, since the feelings seem to remain entrenched within the author’s heart. There’s a sort of beautiful dimness to their music that is surprisingly super satisfying to one’s ears, believe it or not. There are hidden treasures of songs found throughout My Love Is Cool, including a gorgeous reverb-filled tune named Freazy found later on the album along with a heavier one right after named Giant Peach. You just never know what to expect with that album at every twist and turn.

Recently, they released two brand new singles, one being Yuk Fu and the other one Don’t Delete The Kisses. Yuk Foo is a bit harder and more spoken word at times than their previous material, but I still dig it! And Don’t Delete the Kisses is definitely a return to their reverb allure. Regardless, I am so looking forward to their latest album Visions of a Life which is now available for preorder everywhere and is due out in late September. And one of these days I plan on getting to a show before it sells out stateside… SOMEDAY.
