Not Too Long Ago… In a Galaxy Not Too Far Away

MEXICO | SPACE ROCK

OK, so the only reason I know Reyno is because I fell down a musical rabbit-hole on Apple Music several months ago when searching for Latin Rock and wow – I REGRET NOTHING. [I recommend everyone take trips through musical rabbit holes as often as you can, by the way!] I stumbled upon Pacifico (Peaceful), a song from their 2015 album Dualidad (Duality) and could not stop listening to these guys for well over a week. I was practically shouting my love for their epic music from the rooftops, to anyone and everyone who would listen to me. I am obnoxious at times when I fall in love with bands or songs or albums, what can I say? But you need to understand how MESMERIZING these guys’ music is! Here, let me help you with that.

Mexico’s budding alternative rock scene is one of the strongest scenes to date, with new bands popping up left and right – and this one right here is a down-right jewel. Only about five years into their musical career, Reyno has one of the most promising futures ahead of them, musically. Lead singer and guitarist Christian Jean founded the band with drummer Pablo Cantú back in 2012 and within two years’ time, they had released their debut album with UNIVERSAL (how ironic for space rockers, right?!).

Headquartered in Mexico City, the band has 2 studio albums to date, released back-to-back in 2014 and 2015. Viaje Por lo Eterno (Journey For the Eternal) was their debut album and was a complete success that led to open shows for Imagine Dragons and Minus the Bear, two BIG names in music. And it’s no wonder seeing as how the single Dos Mundos (Two Worlds) is absolutely brilliant. It has all of the ingredients to a great rock song – a crunchy and catchy guitar riff, high male vocals that fit the melody well and overall wonderful dynamics to keep the song fresh at every twist and turn through the verse, pre-chorus, chorus and beyond! However, the star track on this album, in my humble opinion, would have to be Amarrado (Tied Up), a stellar song that has it all! It has the “chill” and the “rock”, the subtle yet pretty vocals and the belting chorus vocals, starting out inconspicuous, almost unnoticeable, then revs  into fifth gear, blasting bass, guitars and jamming drum beats. It is because of great tracks like this, which are not lacking when it comes to Reyno, that I fell in love with the genre known as SPACE ROCK.

Their 2015 album Dualidad rocks my socks off and is one I can listen to from start to finish without skipping tracks. When I say epic in regards to their music, I mean it. They don’t call it “Space Rock” for nothing. Dualidad is an impeccably well-written and well-composed album reflective of their growth within a years’ time, which is awe-filling seeing as how that is such a short period of time after their first album. The LP begins with the heroic-sounding Pacifico (Peaceful), then heads into another beautifully constructed tune, Dualidad, the track bearing the same name as the album itself. It lives up to it’s self-titled potential, being one of the best songs on the album. If you don’t believe me, just take a listen to the video below to be amazed. Christian’s voice shines throughout the entire album, hitting high notes with ease, probably making other gentlemen wish they could sing like him in the process. It does not get any more luminously dreamy than when he sings lines from No Olvidé (Don’t Forget) and Fórmula, paired with delayed, echoing-out guitars and chill bass and drums.

Their third LP is a live one, Al Principio del Final (At the Beginning of the End), released in May of this year. It’s insane how spot on they are when it comes to playing live and let’s be honest, that is always a welcome sign of raw and real talent. They fluidly intermingle songs into each other and according to the crowd’s reaction in the background ambience, I can only imagine how fantastic their performance is, live in-person! Some of the intros to the songs are dreamy and one wouldn’t always know which song they are moving onto next, but that adds to the beauty that is Reyno – ALL THAT EPIC SUBTLETY. Oh, and an interesting fact for you – one of their touring members, backing vocalist Alejandra Moreno, is the lead singer of Mexican girl rock band Ruido Rose, another superb band, so that’s pretty cool.

Excuse me for gushing, but I couldn’t quite help myself. Mexico has a massive amount of musical wealth in the form of Christian and Pablo’s galactic explosion known as Reyno and I only see their career blowing up even more in the future – going beyond Mexico and projected into the universe where they belong! I’d keep that telescope ready for action if I was you!
