At First Vance
IRELAND | FOLK
The first time I had ever heard the name “Foy Vance,” I turned to my friend at a Josh Groban concert and said, “That’s a funny way to say Vance Joy. Someone is getting fired.” And then this group of dapper men got on stage and the man who stepped up to the microphone was certainly not Vance Joy.
“Closing my eyes for just a moment, I could imagine myself in Northern Ireland, sitting in a cozy pub on a rainy night with a pint of something delicious listening to soul-soothing music”
“Who is this mustachey man in an ivy cap?” I thought. And why do I need to sit here and listen to him? And then he sang She Burns and I was hooked. Music is magic. Melody can take you to places you’ve never been while lyrics paint you a picture you may have never seen but you feel like you have. Closing my eyes for just a moment, I could imagine myself in Northern Ireland, sitting in a cozy pub on a rainy night with a pint of something delicious listening to soul-soothing music. Yes, music can do that.
Immediately after that concert I found out Foy Vance was coming back to play at a tiny venue in Denver and purchased tickets before even thinking about it. Which meant I had several weeks to listen to and fall in love with even more of this music. And, oh…fall in love I did. *Insert all of the heart eyes right here*

The concert was at the Bluebird Theatre. It’s a small venue and I got to be so close to the stage! There are performers and there are people who are passionate about what they do. The entire band is full of extraordinarily talented members who clearly love what they get to do. These guys made us, the audience, feel like we were long lost friends. I had never experienced that before!
Here are a few things I love about Foy Vance’s music: his voice is like freakin’ honey. So sweet, unique, and very good for you. His songs reach into your soul and wrap around your heart. The melodies are beautiful and easy to connect with. And as someone who has a thing for words, I find myself in many of the lyrics.
“His songs reach into your soul and wrap around your heart.”
In my not-so-humble and not-quite-professional-opinion, She Burns is his very best song so start there. Then move on to Into the Fire and then hit “Shuffle” on Spotify. You’ll thank me later.
