Drumming Up A Dream

Australia | Indie Pop

This is quite the unconventional Cinderella story if I’ve ever heard of one. Once upon a time, there was a touring drummer who dreamt of more out of music for her life. She locked herself in her bedroom for a full year and away with her creative spirit she went! While she began creating and producing her own music, she recognized the need for a sidekick and companion. In no time, a living, blinking, moving drumkit named JEROMO was born! But that’s not where this story ends… that’s only just the beginning.

Ok, ok… so I understand how crazy that sounds, but guys – ALL OF THAT IS TRUE. Georgia Flipo, otherwise known as G Flip, burst onto the music scene out of nowhere just this last February and is one of the artists that I’ve been most intrigued by to date. I think it’s her story… her drive… this girl wants it. She wants to share her love of music with everyone and she is doing everything in her power to grab success by its balls.

INTRO/HISTORY/BACKGROUND

FACTS:

  • Was a touring/session drummer for band EMPRA
  • Based out of Melbourne
  • Plays multiple instruments but her baby is her drumkit
  • Only has 2 songs out to date (as of 7/12/18) and a debut album on the way (hopefully soon)

G Flip doesn’t even have an album out yet and she has already crushed it.

Here are just a handful of her accomplishments since February 2018:

  • Uploaded her debut single About You to Triple J’s Unearthed site and went viral almost instantly
  • Has thousands of music video views on YouTube
  • Has been spun on KCRW and other major radio stations
  • Has been added to some awesome playlists by Spotify
  • Played her first solo show ever at SXSW, a performance which was highly acclaimed

The loss of a drum teacher dear to her heart made Georgia rethink where she was at with this whole “music” thing and caused her to kick her dreams into full gear and make them a reality. And while it all looks like it happened overnight with little-to-no-effort, G Flip admits via pigeonsandplanes.com that it wasn’t like that. “I worked my ass off and went insane in the process, and I missed out on a lot of fun things during 2017.” And this is because… well… she did literally live in her bedroom for most of 2017 producing this album from the ground up. And with no help either. She is the ultimate example of do-it-yourself music, using cheap, pawn-shop equipment to get the job done. She traveled to music seminar after music seminar, trying to get into contact with anyone and everyone who would hear her out. And the passion paid off. People started noticing said passion and she ended up getting her pick of a promotional team. Crazy, huh?

THE MUSIC

G Flip is not a rapper, nor does she produce hip hop music though her name would have you believe differently.

“Her music is gritty and unconventional despite the pop skeleton that supports it”

The very essence of her music challenges current pop music being played on the radio today because it has a seemingly “unpolished” way about it. She described her DIY music plain and simple in an interview with pigeonsandplanes.com, stating that “Pop music can be pretty shiny sometimes and this was not shiny, just like me. I’m far from shiny. I’m messy, I don’t know what make-up is, I wear boy’s clothes and I drink too much. I felt it represented me.” And I would have to agree with that statement. It is through and through what makes her-her, if that makes any sense. Her music is an unapologetic reflection of who she is and what she does best.

With only two songs out to date, you can only get a taste of what G Flip is capable of, but that’s a great thing. It keeps you wanting more and gets you hyped for future stuff from her. She released her first single About You this past February and according to Junkee.com, within hours of it’s existence on the net, it had already made mad waves in Australia and beyond. It begins with a haunting, grimey synth backdrop before she bursts forth with her voice, singing “Now that I can see another part of me, Hittin’ back, slap in the face, yeah, you were the key…”. It kicks further into gear with electronic beats and a dull bass blubbering along to the synthy sound, yet still maintains a grainy minimalism overall. She layers her vocals throughout the track, adding some necessary depth, and then comes the final complexity to the song about 3/4 of the way through: actual, organic drumming complete with fills, crashes and all. You can feel the light and life in her drumming like nothing else. And this makes sense when she explains it to pigeonsandplanes.com: “I think rhythm is always going to be present in my music. Even my melody ideas are somewhat rhythmic because my brain thinks like a drummer.”

Out of the two tracks that are out at the moment, Killing My Time is my jam. The melodies and hooks found in it are out of this world and almost create like a 3-in-1 sort of track. Because just when you think you have the first catchy hook down to sing to, she throws you another one that is just as catchy as the last! And if I had to pick a highlight in the song overall, it would have to be the bridge. It is so cool and smooth when she sings “don’t distract with me with your body, put your clothes back on, I know where this is goin'”. I’m not sure she can get much smoother than lines like those. *insert heart eyes here*

While the subject matter of relationships or love may seem like overkill, G Flip’s rendition and interpretation of such subjects are presented in an undiluted and authentic way that is surprisingly refreshing. She is a major player to watch in the current musical climate, as she is willing to give 200% to get her name out there and to spread the love that is music with anyone and everyone. I’m on board… are you??
