ELECTRONIC MUSIC – COPYCAT OR CREATIVE?

electronic-music-article

There are two types of people in this world…

PEOPLE WHO LOVE ELECTRONIC MUSIC

&

PEOPLE WHO HATE IT WITH A PASSION

I have rarely come across those who, simply put, “tolerate it”. You’re either hardcore about that life, whether you’re a wannabe DJ or a massive fan of crazy huge music festivals like Spring Awakening in Chicago, Ultra Music Festival in Miami, FL, Electric Forest in Rothbury MI, and Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, NV… OR… You hate it so much that you turn the channel on the radio as soon as anything slightly resembling EDM comes on and mock the artists, and/or can be heard stating any of the following lines:

“Music was better in my day.”

“It takes no talent or skill to make that crap.”

“They’re not actual artists or musicians.”

or simply put…

“That’s not real music.”

Some of those thoughts are derived from the fact that software assists heavily in the electronic compositions created by producers, DJs and the like. I get that. One may find that to be a way of cheating the musical system. Or being a cheap way of creating music that takes little-to-no skill whatsoever. I mean, if the software is “doing it for you” then what’s the big deal about that? And what about that whole copying system they’ve got going for them called “sampling”? I mean, if you’re taking something someone already made, then that makes you unoriginal. Or maybe even worse — A COPYCAT.

Well, I am here to challenge these ideas and viewpoints. And imma do it with poor grammar (see previously stated “imma” in this sentence) and video examples. And I’m not even going to share my opinion on this. I just want you to watch the videos below and see if it changes your mind at all. Makes you hate it or love it more. Could go either way.

Two videos can be viewed below… and actually, I would probably start with part two if I were you. These vids feature Canadian music producer extraordinaire Andrew Huang showcasing what 4 different producers can create using the same song sample. IT’S INSANE. 4 different producers are featured in each video, all from different parts of the world (Seattle, Wales, LA, Norway, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia). Each has their own sound and reinvent the same sample in almost unrecognizable ways sometimes.

These videos revitalized and refreshed my thoughts on electronic music production as a whole.

Let me know your thoughts!!!
