RANK’D – Tegan and Sara

I have a confession to make: “My name is Abbey and I have been a massive Tegan and Sara fan since I was 18 (circa 2005)” Ok, so maybe it’s not a big and bad, super dark secret or anything and anyone who knows me personally knows this, but whatever. Like any real life love story where you fall hard, I remember it like it was yesterday when I first heard a song of their’s. Practically all the details, I kid you not. I first discovered Tegan and Sara while listening to Sirius Radio back in 2005. I had a … Continue reading RANK’D – Tegan and Sara

LOST RECORDINGS… IDENTITY CRISISES

Tomorrow… something weird is dropping. And I’ve listened to it. Norway’s capital city of Oslo is no stranger to all different music scenes, including a decently large punk scene. I’ve never heard of something this bizarre though… A band that lasted a day. A DAY. Fifteen years ago, in 2003, two members of the band Speedergarben got together in the studio to play leftover material they had and this is the product of that studio time. What came of it is three tracks that are just shy of five minutes all together. Did I mention that this happened 15 years … Continue reading LOST RECORDINGS… IDENTITY CRISISES

THIS JUST IN: Music News 10.15.2018

Trump Signs Music Law Into Act OK, so Sferikul is not a political site and it never will be. However, I thought this story was an interesting and relevant one, especially for songwriters. On Thursday, October 11, 2018 President Trump signed the Music Modernization Act into law after it passed through congress with flying colors. The best description I could find of what this law does for songwriters was found on Forbes here. Ross Golan is a multi-platinum songwriter who was, as Forbes calls him, the “de facto leader among songwriters”, and after reading the interview, I could see why. … Continue reading THIS JUST IN: Music News 10.15.2018

SPOTLIGHT: Bulgaria

Bulgaria is home to the Land of Roses (85% of the world’s rose oil supply), tennis player Grigor Dmitrov, and St. Clement of Ohrid, oh, you know, JUST THE SAINT WHO IS BELIEVED TO HAVE INVENTED THE CYRILLIC ALPHABET USED IN MOST SLAVIC LANDS TODAY. NBD. The country belongs to the geographic area called the Balkans (due to the Balkan Peninsula), a peninsular area that is also home to about 12 other countries. Having been a part of the Ottoman Empire back in the day, their food as well as their music has been heavily influenced by Turkey. Like many … Continue reading SPOTLIGHT: Bulgaria

“Bloodbeats” – Exclusive Review

Bloodbeats by Syndrom NORWAY  |  INDUSTRIAL/HEAVY ROCK Release date: September 28, 2018 If there is one thing you should know about this 4-piece heavy rock band from Oslo, it’s that they are not for the weak of heart. With a mixture of minimalist, industrialist and the experimental, Syndrom creates a sort of doom and gloom brand of rock that could be found on either a Rob Zombie movie soundtrack or an old 80’s campy slasher flick soundtrack. While the track listing only sits at a measly 6 songs, it is made up for by 3 of the 6 songs being … Continue reading “Bloodbeats” – Exclusive Review
