Thomas Lundell

A Scandinavian Songbird Finds His Tune

SWEDEN | Pop

Apple Music, I adore you a whole bunch.

I was listening through AM’s new weekly picks for me and this gentleman was smack dab in the middle of that playlist. Your Loss starts out in an almost country-western way with a strummy guitar and as soon as Lundell starts singing, I am hooked. Some male voices in the pop world can seem a bit overdone, overproduced or as though they are trying too hard, in my opinion; Thomas is an exception beyond all exceptions. He is the entire package – writes his own songs, plays and sings his own songs and is a looker on top of all of that.

This stunning 27 year old Swedish native from a small town named Gnosjö, began writing songs as soon he learned to play the guitar in his teens, and even auditioned for Idol in Sweden at one point. However, his big break came when he sent a demo to one of his favorite artists, Andreas Moe, another poppy Swedish singer/songwriter. Andreas then helped him finish writing one of his songs, Slow Dance, my favorite single of his to date. But that wasn’t all, Moe also invited Thomas to open for him at some of his shows on his first headline tour across Europe, giving Thomas the first-hand experience of a lifetime as an artist!

Lundell’s style of music is probably best described as feel-good, uplifting, yet realistic folky pop, with a dose of love and romance thrown into the mix. His music does not rely on the current electronic trend to make it catchy, but relies instead upon the good ole organic guitar and crisp, clear vocals – that’s all he needs to create beautiful, pull-on-your-heart-strings music.

I can see his single Slow Dance being on a romantic movie soundtrack or something, where the lead characters who fell in love are dancing in slow motion together, because it is JUST THAT GOOD. It is a magical pop song with an absolutely gorgeous and well-thought out melody, that I just couldn’t help but loop a few times when I first heard it. It’s hard to peg who he sounds like exactly, but that’s a FANTASTIC thing. Maybe he’s close to a Matt Nathanson or Tyrone Wells… with a dose of Greg Laswell or Jason Reeves? Maybe? I don’t know. Thomas is Thomas.

Though he has only just begun his music career recently, he has already made major splashes with his music, at nearly 4 million plays on Spotify! The kicker? HE ONLY HAS 3 SINGLES OUT SO FAR. That’s right… he doesn’t even have a full length album out as of yet and he has already found that much success. With a new track being released sometime this fall, I can’t help but feel super excited for what lies ahead for him in the near future. Here’s to your bright future, TL!
